Program Goal and Philosophy

The Mission of The Growing Stage Workshop Program is to provide educational and performing opportunities to interested children and youth in dramatic and theatrical arts.

Artistic Director

Connie Lamothe began modeling as a teenager and later studied drama which led her to years of community theatre. She appeared in numerous musical and theatrical productions and also was a semi-finalist in the Ms. Virginia Pageant. In the 1990’s Connie produced and directed children’s theatrical productions in the Northern Virginia area. She also began performing professionally in the Washington Metropolitan area as a lead in the musical comedy, Joey and Maria’s Italian Wedding. During the six year run, Ms. Lamothe was appointed Director.

More recently, Connie has become involved in film and has appeared in over 14 films from background to Principal. Additionally, Ms. Lamothe is writing, directing and producing a full feature film entitled “The Driver”. She also serves as a member of Roman Pictures Management and Writers groups and is a member of the Virginia Screenwriters Forum.

The Growing Stage Workshops 2008

Comedic Timing ~ Ages 15 & up ~ March 29, 2008 9am-4pm $50.00
In this workshop, student will learn about the different types of delivery, how to hold for a laugh and what to do while the audience is losing it, how not to take something funny too far and learn where the edge of funny is and what is just plain gross!

Auditioning for Musical Theatre ~ Ages 15 & up ~ April 5, 2008 $50.00
This workshop will be geared toward the older student or adult with emphasis on all the techniques and skills necessary to audition for a musical production and get cast.

Building a Character ~ Ages 11-15 ~ April 19, 2008 $50.00
This workshop will explore the many ways in which a role can be created. It will allow the children’s natural curiosities to guide their learning, and the students abilities to enhance their acting flexibility as they create a panoply of characters based on sounds, gestures or psychological intentions. At the end of the day they will all interact with each other in their own mini-production.

Vocal Techniques ~ Ages 15 & up ~ May 3 & 4, 2008 $100.00
Learn to hear, feel and see the physical results of proper singing. Learn to coordinate proper laryngeal function, resonance, breath management, diction and vocal legato to encompass a safe and healthy singing experience.

Creating Characters ~ Ages 15 & up ~ May 24, 2008 $50.00
In this class we will explore the world of crating original characters, inspired by a the ideas of the students and the journeys they take in class, through improve exercises, interactive in-class writing assignments, exploration of acting techniques and principals specific to our goal. All sound so technical, but the class will be loads of fun!

SUMMER Musical Theatre Workshops for Middle & High School Students
(for rising 6th – 12th graders)

Schoolhouse Rock Live! Junior
The Emmy® Award-winning Saturday morning educational cartoon series is the basis for one of the most fun, energetic musical ever to hit the school stage! Tom, a school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching TV. Suddenly, the Schoolhouse Rock bunch appear in his home and proceed to show him how to win over his students with imagination and music, through beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs that cover math, science, history and grammar. ($495)

Performances on Thursday, July 10 at 7 pm and Friday, July 11 at 1 pm


Godspell Junior
Featuring a string of recognizable songs, led by the international hit "Day By Day," this best loved musical by three-time Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz draws from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell Junior is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. ($495)

Loudoun County High School
July 14 – August 1 (9 am – 3 pm, Monday – Friday)
Performances on Thursday, July 31 at 7 pm and Friday, August 1 at 1 pm

Elementary School Musical Theatre Workshops

Disney's The Aristocats Kids
Madame’s jealous butler Edgar cat-naps Duchess and her Aristokittens and abandons them in the French countryside. What’s a cat to do? Luckily, Thomas O’Malley and his rag-tag bunch of Alley Cats come to their rescue! This feline adventure features a hep, jazzy beat, and includes the Disney favorites “The Aristocats,” “Scales and Arpeggios” and “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat.” ($400)

Dear Edwina Junior
Follow the adventures of advice-giver extraordinaire, Edwina Spoonapple, as she directs the kids in the neighborhood in production number after hilarious production number in her "Advice-A-Palooza" extravaganza. Written in the style of Schoolhouse Rock Live! and You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, Dear Edwina Junior is the perfect girl power musical for a new generation. ($400)

*Creative Drama* *Camp*
(for rising K-2nd graders)

Creative Drama Camp is a great place for your child to familiarize and fine tune his/her instincts to perform. Our Directors are College Theatre majors, eager to share their love of the theatre with your budding thespian. No acting experience required, everyone is welcome. All participants will be cast in an on-stage role and will also work on behind-the-scenes activities, including prop and set construction. (Fee: $150)

2 sessions at Luckett's Community Center
9 am – 1 pm, Monday - Friday, presentation for friends and family on Friday

Session 1: July 7 - 11
Session 2: July 28 - August 1
